Working With Men
Much of the literature and focus in the area of violence against women is focused on women and targeting them to help them better protect themselves, to provide them with resources to leave abusive situations and to cope with the effects of violence in their lives. The other part of the equation is often forgotten.
Here we highlight numerous projects, tools and research that is aimed at involving men in the fight against gender based violence.

I. Research
Men, Gender-Based Violence and Sexual and Reproductive Health: A Study with Men in Rio de Janeiro This report presents the results of a qualitative and quantitative study of men ages 15-60 in three neighbourhoods in Rio de Janeiro (two low income and one middle income) on gender violence and sexual and reproductive health. A questionnaire was applied to 749 men and focus group discussions carried out with 52 men in the same neighbourhoods.
Report on Gender Sensitization and Planning Workshop for Male Trainers in combating Gender Based Violence This report covers a workshop aimed at creating and strengthening a core team of male activists and supporters for the long–term campaign to eliminate Gender Based Violence.
Partners in Change: Working with Men to End Gender-Based Violence The papers in this volume explore the different kinds of partnerships for ending gender-based violence, and men's roles and responsibilities within these. These roles in and responsibilities for change range across the spectrum, from men changing their relationships with their intimate partners to male-dominated institutions changing the way they function in order to better confront issues of gender and violence. Some of the individual, institutional and structural changes that are required are discussed in this volume, as are ways in which men can become partners, with each other and with women, in making these changes.
Conversations With Mothers Of Color Who Have Experienced Domestic Violence, Regarding Working With Men To End Domestic Violence This paper explores the attitudes and perceptions of women of color survivors with children. The overarching objective was to hear what these women had to say about efforts to engage men and fathers of color as allies in stopping intimate partner violence and restoring health in partnership and parenting.
Involving Men to Address Gender Inequalities Profiles of three innovative programs (Salud y Género, Society for the Integrated Development of the Himalayas (SIDH), and Stepping Stones) that have involved men and youth in efforts to improve reproductive health outcomes for both men and women.
Must Boys Be Boys? Ending Sexual Exploitation and Abuse in UN Peacekeeping Missions This report uses UN peacekeeping missions in Liberia and Haiti as examples and argues that a "hyper-masculine culture" has evolved that breeds a "wall of silence" and a tolerance for such extreme behaviors.
Symposium on Male Participation in Sexual and Reproductive Health: New Paradigms – Report A report examining and summarizing the symposium held in Oaxaca , Mexico , on male participation in sexual and reproductive health. Report includes: Masculinity/ies; Sexulaity/ies; Prevention of Sexually Transmitted Diseases; Violence; Fatherhood Country Action Plans; and Recommendations.

Toolkit for Working with Men and Boys to Prevent Gender-Based Violence
Involving Men in Sexual and Reproductive Health: An Orientation Guide A tool organized by modules intended to raise awareness and make the case for male involvement in family planning, STD/HIV prevention, safe motherhood, and reducing gender-based violence (May 2002). This CD-ROM is also available in Spanish.

The White Ribbon Campaign (WRC) This is the largest effort in the world of men working to end men's violence against women with a presence in over 47 countries worldwide.
